Major: Political Science
Tagline:  The EEOC, the NSF, ABC 20/20…what’s next for Leadership Rice veteran Katherine Gomer?

KatherineGomerI initially became involved in Leadership Rice as a freshman in LEAD 309, coordinating a recruiting campaign for Muscular Dystrophy Association summer volunteers. Since then, Leadership Rice has played an incredible role in my academic career.

After freshman year, I applied for Leadership Rice’s Summer Mentorship Experience program. I interned for the Regional Attorney of the Equal Employment Opportunity Commission in Houston where I worked on cases of employment discrimination. It was through that first SME that I discovered my passion for the law.  The following summer, I focused my efforts in Washington, D.C., one of the SME sites outside Houston, with an internship at the Office of Legislative Affairs of the National Science Foundation. I attended Congressional hearings on Capital Hill, wrote speeches for the Director, and worked to increase funding for the scientific research.

I am very proud of my most recent SME. With Leadership Rice’s help, I earned a position at ABC 20/20 in New York City. As one of two interns for John Stossel, I worked on script writing, research, interviews and episode production.

After graduation in May, I am confident that the knowledge gained from my three Leadership Rice Summer Experiences will be invaluable in law school. I urge all students to consider applying for the Summer Mentorship Experience and to take Leadership Rice courses- the opportunities are endless and it could bring you to some unbelievable places and people.
